Subject Gangdong-gu District Office is in full swing to build a general welfare center for the disabled!

The project to build the "Disabled Welfare Center" that Gangdong-gu District (District mayor Lee Jung hun) is promoting to provide comprehensive welfare services for the disabled, including rehabilitation treatment for the disabled, will be carried out in earnest after the design contest.

In January, the district held a design contest for the district general welfare center for the disabled in Olympic road 741 (Cheonho-dong), Cheonho and Amsa-centered region with the largest number of disabled people, and received 15 works and selected the winner of the contest on March 24.

The final winner is the "City Opened Welfare Center for the Disabled" of Sumbi Architects Office. It is characterized by an open design of low floors, community gardens and book café that stimulate natural influx of local residents, therefore allowing disabled and non-disabled people to interact.

In addition, it is characterized by a space where disabled people can safely get on and off at the opened low floor and an outdoor rest area in entire floors that will perform various functions.

The delicacy of considering the accessibility and safety of the mobile weak as the first priority was well evaluated, and the fact that it was designed as an eco-friendly zero-energy building that can minimize energy requirements was also noted.

Construction of the welfare center will begin at the end of this year after completing the design service in April. The total floor area is 4,553㎡ while being composed of the 3rd basement floors and six stories above the ground. It is scheduled to be completed in December 2023 with spaces for both disabled and non-disabled people, including underwater rehabilitation rooms, book cafes, multi-purpose rehabilitation rooms, fitness centers, temporary care rooms, auditoriums, and public parking lots.
It also plans to promote Barrier Free certification without obstacles and 1++ grade certification of green buildings and energy efficiency for zero-energy buildings to prevent inconvenience for disabled users.

"The establishment of Gangdong-gu Welfare Center for the Disabled is expected to significantly improve access to welfare services for the disabled in Cheonho and Amsa provinces," said Lee Jung hun, head of Gangdong-gu Office. He added that "By expanding the scope of welfare services for the disabled, we will establish ourselves as a hub space for the disabled and the non-disabled to implement happy Gangdong together.”
