Subject Health Promotion of Gangdong-gu

Gangdong-gu(Lee Haesik) held a ceremony for the ‘10th anniversary of the proclamation of Health City Gangdong’ with more than 200 people including residents, professionals, KHCP members, and related officials.

It was held to look into the past 10 years of Helth City Gangdong, the chairman of the Korea Healthy Cities Council (KHCP), and look for a future vision to move forward to become a sustainable health city.

Since joining the Western Pacific Healthy Cities Federation (AFHC) in 2008 and declaring 'Healthy City Gangdong', the city has been playing a role of 'health preservation' for the healthy life of the residents.

In December 2008, for the prevention and management of chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, Nursing Center was established for the first time in the nation. Currently, 56 private clubs are operated and residents voluntarily use the center to make healthcare-life.

In November 2010, it was enacted the 'Ordinance on Activation and Support of Environmentally Friendly Urban Agriculture' for the first time in the nation. This was the first attempt to combine urban agriculture in the administrative area, leading to a nationwide urban agriculture fever under the vision of '1 household and 1 garden by 2020'. Urban agriculture is meaningful as a healthy city project that contributes to emotional health and eco-friendly policy in response to climate change.

In addition, Gangdong-gu have promoted a variety of healthy city projects such as making the way for pedstrian, making healthy schools, salt-free healthy meals, and reducing food waste in the city, to create a healthy environment.

In recognition of these works, Gangdong-gu won three awards of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Western Pacific Healthy Cities Alliance (AFHC).

In addition, In March 26, the Korea Health Equity Association shows that Gangdong-gu has the smallest health inequality in the nation.

Mayor of Gangdong-gu Lee haesik said, "The most desirable value of residents is 'health.' Based on 10 years of experience and accomplishments in the health city of Gangdong, we will plan the next 10 years to ensure that all residents are healthy. And I will actively promote health city policy so that we can carry out the health promotion. "
