Subject Gangdong-gu, Child Friendly City

Gangdong-gu was certificated by Unicef as a “Child Friendly Cities” 22 March 2017. What is a Child Friendly City? It is a city, or more generally a system of local governance, committed to fulfilling children’s rights. A child friendly city of Unicef is the embodiment of the UN Convention on the Rights at a local level. Unicef declares that children under 18 ages have the rights to appropriate information, to express their own opinion, to protection in times of war, to know and live their own culture, to meet and share views with others, to play, to protection from sexual abuse, to survive and develop to fullest, to a home, to a loving and caring family, to a healthy environment, to protection from hazardous work and drug, to education, and to food and nutrition. Thus Gangdong-gu as Child friendly local city in which the opinions and voices of children under 18 ages are reflected thoroughly works a project of improvement of children’s life environment.
Firstly, Gangdong –gu committee set up an ordinance for constructing Children Friendly City. Secondly, they evaluate children’s effect and study children’s real condition. Thirdly they come up with safety measures of children. Fourthly, they give a variety of participation opportunities through youth assembly. Fifthly, they spread out public relation and campaign for honoring children’s rights.
The United Nations convention on the Rights of the Child is a human rights treaty which sets out the civil, political, economic, social, health and cultural rights of children. UN conventions on the Rights of the Child specify the basic rights of the children such as the right to life, custody of children, the right to development and the right to participate. Thus Based on UN Convention Gangdong-gu made 10 their own declarative-statement of the Right of the Child.
