Subject Gangdong-gu starts 2018 Beekeeping School

On May 22, Gangdong-gu (Chief Lee Hae-Sik) will hold the opening ceremony of 'The First 2018 City Beekeeping School' at 10:00 am, Myungil Neighborhood park.

Gangdong-gu is operating city beekeeping since 2013, on the basis of optimal local condition that has abundant greenery ratio and the best environment for bees to grow, developed by environment-friendly agricultural system.

The 'Gang-dong City Beekeeping School' is so popular that about 30 people are always on the waiting list every time, and the Beekeeping School has produced about 220 beekeepers so far. Starting with 10 beehives, last year, they extracted about 619 kilograms of honey (acacia honey, Chestnut honey, Multiflora honey, etc.) from 30 beehives.

The first 2018 City Beekeeping School starting from May 22nd will end on June 14th, and will be held on Thursdays (10: 00 ~ 12: 00) for 12 weeks.

During the City Beekeeping School, participants will take theoretical classes that will teach the ways to manage springtime bees, extract honey, prevent harmful insects, and raise the queen bee, along with practical training classes.

Gangong-gu chief Lee Hae-Sik said, "Gangdong-gu has been promoting eco-friendly urban agriculture projects for the first time in Seoul and has been pursuing eco-friendly urban agriculture in various fields such as city beekeeping and herbal medicine as well as cultivating garden trees since 2009." In particular, it is expected that the City Beekeeping School will help promote the local economy by letting people know the preciousness of the city ecological system and creating jobs related to urban agriculture.
