Subject Why Gangdong-gu started the ‘Save the local bookstore’ business?

Gangdong-gu has bought 2.8 billion won worth of books at ‘Local Bookstore where People Are Beautiful Union’ for four years.
Gangdong-gu(head officer of Gangdong-gu office, Haesik Lee) supports local bookstores’ book purchase worth a total of 2.8 billion won.
Union was established with 11 local bookstores in Gangdong-gu in April 2015.
Since the launch of the book price reguolation, Union was established in order to compete with large bookstores and online bookstores. Gangdong-gu has joined forces with the local bookstore owners to save the local bookstores.
After 2015, Gangdong-gu has signed a contract with Union to purchase the books for a total of 1.8 billion won over the past three years.
This year Gangdong-gu is going to increase its support to Union.
Thanks to Gandong-gu’s massive support, local bookstores which join the Union grew a lot in management and book delivery capability.
Now over 90% of school library and public institutions are signing in Union’s book purchase contract.
Also Union is supporting the sponsorship to ‘Gangdong Talk Festival’, ‘Gangdong Ancient Culture Festival’ to return the profit to society. Moreover, it donates about 200 new books to small library.
A Ward Chief of Gangdong-gu, Lee Haesik, said “Despite of crisis of local bookstores such as Songin bookstore’s bankruptcy, local bookstores in Gangdong-gu have achieved the highest contract amount ever. Coexistence of Gangdong-gu and local bookstores Union is a good example of how cooperation can have a great influence on the local economy market.”, and exclamed “We will continue to work closely with city and cooperative groups to not only help the local bookstore in real terms, but also promote the local culture.
