Subject Discarded coffee grounds, used as compost for livestock farming

The annual consumption of coffee per person in Korea is 377 cups. People drink coffee every day 365 days a year.

During the process of dropping coffee, 99.8% of the beans are discharged as debris, and 3 ~ 5kg of coffee residue per day is abandoned per a coffee shop. It is a tremendous amount to collect all.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 6th that it will implement a system to recycle abandoned coffee scraps as compost for the first time in Jongro, Dongjak, Guro, Songpa and Gangdong-gu in Seoul.

The coffee grounds are rich in organic matter and moisture, making them environmentally friendly. However, in order to utilize it, coffee shops must separate and discharge waste, and have collection and transportation systems and final recycling facilities.

In the future, 2,600 coffee shops in 5 districts of Seoul will release coffee grounds in a bag or transparent plastic bag separately. Street cleaner collect coffee waste separately when collecting municipal waste.

Collected coffee grounds are mixed with livestock manure at livestock farms to make compost. In the livestock farmers, the sawdust is mixed to control the moisture of the manure, and the minimum price of sawdust is about 50,000 won per ton.

Seoul Metropolitan Government explains that using coffee grounds that are provided free of charge can reduce farmers' costs as well as odor. Each ward office can reduce waste disposal costs by reducing landfill and incineration, and coffee shops can save the cost of purchasing standard bags.

Coffee shops that want to participate in the coffee waste recycling business can apply to cleaning administrative departments of the five ward office.
