Subject Global Internship at Gangdong-gu Office

The TV shows featuring foreigners in Korea draw attention and popularity now a days. These programs give us unique fun by showing foreign visitors who are experiencing different culture sometimes alarmed and flustered as well as providing us outsider's view to Korea. Foreigners visiting and staying in Korea are ever increasing and the warm interest to them grows as well.

In line with such atmosphere, Gangdong-gu organized a special program for foreign students. It is a global internship program for foreign students to work at Gangdong-gu Office as public servant interns. It started last year and was operated during summer and winter season. It provides foreign students with an opportunity to experience Korean local administration and, in return, foreigners provide ward office with global environment and fresh air.

Last winter, 122 foreign students from 33 countries applied for Gangdong-gu internship and 8 foreign students were finally selected. They were with diverse background from various countries including Malaysia, Uzbekistan, Kenya, Hungari and China.

Gangdong-gu placed them in adequate jobs whereby they can exert their expertise and talents. The foreign student interns worked at Gangpool Cartoon Street, Amsa Library, Gangdong Reborn Center and Locan Childcare Center for four weeks. They taught children English, took after abandoned dogs, collected foreign community policies, and translated captions on the graffiti art of Gangpool Cartoon Street.

At the completion ceremony after 4 weeks of internship, every participant shared his or her experience and feeling during the internship. Ominde Hajeong Fanish(Panish?) from Kenya said, "Through internship, I have an opportunity to experience working in Korea. And I was happy to have a chance to introduce my country Kenya to Korean children."

18 foreign students who participated internship programs will make bridges connecting the world and Korea as well as Gangdong-gu. They will also be ambassadors and PR specialists of Gangdong-gu in 'Glocal era' where cultural, political and economic barriers are pulled down and the whole word has become a global village. Gangdong-gu plans to provide internship program for foreign students continuously. If you are interested, call us! ☎02)3425-5061~4
