Gangdong-gu, collects abolishing medicine and medical supplies that cause environmental problem
- Gangdong-gu, designated every second Tuesday of even months as “Collecting Day of Abolishing Medicine and Medical Supplies”
- Total 4,310kg of abolishing medicine and medical supplies were collected from 390 pharmacies in 2017
Gangdong-gu (head officer Lee Hae-sik) announced that they were going to designate every second Tuesday of even months (in October, third Tuesday because of Hanguelnal) as “Collecting Day of Abolishing Medicine and Medical Supplies” and collect and then incinerate them.
Abolishing medicine and medical supplies refer to unusable medical things of which the expiration date has passed, or has been spoiled or decayed that are in common households, so that they cannot be used.
If these medical supplies are discarded in soil or drain, chemical materials from them infiltrate into ecosystem and then they cause environmental pollution. It can also harm people’s health, so they should be discarded properly after they are separated.
So Gangdong-gu is continuously managing ‘Collecting abolishing medicine and medical supplies of common households’ business with Gangdong-gu Pharmaceutical Association. If we put these stuffs into ‘abolishing medicine and medical supplies collection box’, health center takes them every other month. Total 4,310kg of them were collected from 390 pharmacies through last year with this method.
However, a lot of pharmacies are having trouble because of bad smell and shortage of room in pharmacy. Also, extra charge can be caused because other kinds of garbage may be mixed in them.
Accordingly, Gangdong-gu asked people to separate only the stuffs and throw them away when the “Collecting Day of Abolishing Medicine and Medical Supplies” is getting close.
