Subject Korean New Year's Day Daljip Teugi Festival

Our community is holding the '2018 New Year's Day Daljip Teugi (Moon House Burning) Festival' on Saturday, February 24th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the community garden in Myungil Geunlin Park (145-6, Sangil-dong). This event is held to gather the farmers and residents of the city together to enjoy our traditional customs and pray for the good harvest of the year, and for our family and neighbors. On this day, you can participate in many Korean traditional activities such as Buleom Kkaegi(Crunching Nuts) and Jwibul Nori (Mouse Fire Game) which are some of the representative customs of the New Year's Day and eat a variety of food such as rice balls. You can also enjoy traditional games (Yut Game 윷놀이, Arrow Throwing 투호, Jaegi Chagi 제기차기) and urban agriculture experience programs. When the sun goes down, the highlight of the event, the burning of the moon house, begins at 7 pm. Residents and urban farmers hope their wishes come true by praying for the abundance and peace of the year. For more information, please contact the Kangdong-gu Urban Agricultural Portal Site and the City's Urban Agriculture Department. (Urban Agriculture Division 02-3425-6540) - For those who don’t know Daljip taeugi (Moon house burning): Daljip taeugi (Kor. 달집태우기, lit. burning the Moon House) was a festive folk custom celebrating the Great Full Moon Festival, which fell on the fifteenth of the first lunar month. During this festival, participants built daljip (Kor. 달집, lit. moon house), a large bonfire structure, with fresh branches of a pine tree and other logs, and set it on fire with the rise of the full moon, praying for fortune and prevention from evil.
