Gangdong-gu designates every Tuesday of even-numbered months’ second week as a ‘Collection Day of Expired Medicaiton’ -Disposal of expired, corrupted and deteriorated medications On February 4th, Gangdong-gu, Seoul, declared that every Tuesday of even-numbered months’ second week will be designated as a ‘Collection Day of Expired Medication’, and expired medications will be picked up and incinerated. Expired medication is a medication or medicine which cannot be used because of corruption, deterioration or expiration among unused medications at common households. If these medications are mixed in household wastes and end up in landfills or discarded in drains, various kinds of chemical materials will permeate the ecosystem, causing severe environmental pollution. In addition, this kind of contaimination might ruin residents’ health, whereupon those expired medications should be separated and discarded in proper way. Accordingly, Gangdong-gu is consistently proceeding this project with Gangdon-gu Pharmaceutical Association. People discard leftover medicines or unused medications in ‘expired medication collection box’ in pharmacies, and public health center picks them up on a ‘Collection Day of Expired Medication’ to incinerate them. In this way, 4310 kilograms of expired medications were picked up and discarded from 390 pharmacies last year. However, odor from expired medications and spatial deficit problems are causing hardship for pharmacies to continue this project. Moreover, as expired medications contain regular wastes, papers and plastic packing materials, it makes additional incineration costs. On this, Gangdong-gu officials requested residents to separate expired medications properly and bring them to the pharmacy when the collection day is as near as possible. |
