Subject A New Home for Abandoned Dogs, Reborn Center

A new year has begun! We hope all of the citizens of Gangdong-gu have a happy new year.
This year is the year of the “golden dog.” The dog is an old friend of us, and is the symbol of faith and honesty.
It accompanied us throughout the long years of history, and today, dogs became one of the mostly loved pets for people. Ten million pets live with us; nevertheless, 200 pets every day are abandoned in the cold streets of winter.
According to Statistics Korea, only fifty percent of the abandoned pets are redistributed to a new owner. The left forty-three percent are left alone to death inside of the temporary hostage.
The ones who lost their masters wander the streets. When they are caught, they are put into the Abandoned Pets Shelter. If they cannot find their new masters under fifteen days, they are administered euthanasia.
Unfortunately, the remote location of the Animal Shelter caused hardship for people who are interested in adopting abandoned pets. To solve this problem on a regional scale, Gangdong-gu opened a new adoption center, ‘Reborn,’ in last November. It’s the first café-type adoption center in the whole country.
Externally, Reborn looks like a sweet pet-café, but actually, it is an adoption center that protects and helps abandoned/lost pets find their new home. Unlike the original shelters, it provides a place for people to enjoy coffee in a comfortable environment, helping them associate easily with the pets.
After the opening of Reborn, three siblings abandoned in a box, a Jindo dog rescued from abuse, a hybrid, and 23 other dogs were protected in the center. The citizens who first visited the center expressed surprise at the bright, happy faces of the dogs. They all exclaimed, “Are they really abandoned dogs?”
The Reborn Center is waiting for people who are ready to help pets once scarred by humans to love and live with humans again. Various people visit the Reborn Center, from children with their parents to big families. People whose family is consisted of more than two people are welcomed, even if they are not a Gangdong-gu resident. After revising adoption plans with a professional, candidates are given twenty days of careful deliberation. If their intent is unchanged, the pets get to find their new families. The deliberation time will help abandoned pets find their proper families. This is the ultimate goal of the Reborn Center.
We hope the Reborn Center will become a ‘ribbon’ that ties up once scarred pets with new, warm-welcoming families.
