Subject Starting adoption at Gangdong-gu abandoned dog adoption center for stopping dog euthanasia

Gangdong-gu, the first municipality in Korea to open an adoption center in November last year, starts sending abandoned dogs.
Gangdong-gu Office announced on the 11th that there are 22 abandoned dogs in the ‘Café Ribbon(Yangjae Road 81 Road 73) and they’ll be adopted by new protector from the 13th. There are six dogs which will be adopted, including two to three years old poodles and four months old mixed dogs. The café’s name ‘Ribbon’ means ReBorn.
The center is available not just in Gangdong-gu. People who want to adopt dogs must not change their minds of adoption after the counseling period of 20 days. In the province, dogs are vaccinated for rabies vaccinations, integrated vaccines, and identification microchips. However, the province doesn’t neutralize them.
Adoption is possible every second Saturday of every month. Adoption certificate ceremony, guiding the dogs, education and so on will be preceded. New protectors are required to have five lessons for five weeks after the adoption and they can learn basic knowledge and communication methods for raising dogs.
Choi Jae-min, head of animal welfare team in Gangdong-gu said, “Abandoned dogs are reported one day a day in the hall. Before opening the center, I sent out dogs to a private abandoned animal shelter in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, which we contracted on consigned. We spent 200~3,000,000 won a month, but now we can save the money and don’t have to euthanize the dogs. Seongnam City is showing interest in the center.”
Since there is no abandoned animal shelter in Seoul, most autonomous regions pay 150,000 won per animal and send them to the private abandoned animal shelter in Yangju, Gyeongggi Province.
Gangdong-gu is regarded as the “Animal Welfare Autonomous Region”, including giving food for alley cats. The abandoned cats in the hall are protected by abandoned cat protection facilities at the roof of the guoffice.
