My esteemed Gangdong people, Happy New Year. The past year was a tumultuous period. For the first time in the history of the Constitution, the incumbent president was expelled and the regime was replaced by early elections. The cry of the plaza and candlelight democracy reminded us of the principle of a sovereign nation. There is also a debate on constitutional amendments that can amend the Constitution in time for the next 30 years since 1987. It is imperative that the local constitutional amendment must be made for the national development strategy to improve the national competitiveness by raising the independence and creativity of the provinces, and to prepare for macroscopic changes such as low fertility, aging and low growth. Our Gangdong-gu passes through the midst of turbulent times. The city has been experiencing the biggest changes in population and residential environment ever since it was built. The population of Gangdong-gu, which is currently 430,000 , is expected to reach 540,000 by 2022 by reconstructing large-scale apartments. Gangdong-gu is the only place in Seoul where the population fluctuates. Traffic conditions are also improving dramatically. The subway 5.8.9 extension project is proceeding smoothly, and a preliminary feasibility study is underway for the extension of the fourth stage of the 9th line. In particular, if subway line 9 is extended to Gangil-dong, the accessibility to the city center will be improved. The steps toward a self-sufficient city also accelerate. Three main projects which are the engineering complex, the Godeok commercial business complex and the high-tech business complex, and the Urban Renewal Project in Cheonho, Seongnae and Amsa areas, will greatly enhance the self-sufficiency of Gangdong-gu. We will continue to invest in people, such as education, culture, environment, health, and welfare, as well as people-centered policies that prioritize people. In 2018, we will make every effort to make people's beautiful city and sustainable city of happiness. I would like to ask for your continued support and encouragement in the new year.
