Subject The Photographic Exhibition - "If the memory is alive, the person is alive"

Gangdong-gu will hold a photographic exhibition "If the memory is alive, the person is alive" from the Gangdong Art Center gallery until January 14, 2017.

The work of this photo exhibition is the work of Son Seung-hyun who has been working on the subject of diaspora. A portrait of Korean ethnic multiculturalism that has been going on for the past 20 years, and 'Korea Arirang', which records the lives of Sakhalin and Koreans from Central Asia since 2010, are displayed together. Especially this year, it is more meaningful as it is the 80th anniversary of forced migration of Koreans in Central Asia. The exhibition was hosted by the Gangdong Art Center and organized by the Gangdong-gu Assembly and the Gangdong-gu Council for Living Politics and Practice.

The exhibition was held to celebrate the 80th anniversary of forced migration of Koreans in Central Asia, to further promote the name and sacrifice of the victims of forced labor in the Japanese occupation and to convey the truth of historical sacrifice to future generations to remember and memorialize the most painful history of Korean modern history.

This exhibition shows 132 portraits of Korean diaspora in Europe, America, Russian, Sakhalin, China, Japan and North Korean refugees.

Half a century ago, you can see pictures of Korean people who had to leave their homes to avoid war and poverty. The story that Korean immigrants had to experience in other societies is expected to help us understand the situation of Korea in which various ethnic and cultural groups coexist today.

Lee Jun-hyeong, chairperson of the Gangdong-gu Council for Living Politics and Practice said "As the words of Mr. Danjae Shin Chae-ho, 'There is no future for the people who have forgotten history', we have to convey the sad history of our modern history to future generations. I want to see a lot of visitors"

In the meantime, "Talk with the writer" was held at 2:00 pm on December 16 to recognize the historical victims of the Japanese colonial rule and anti-human war crimes, and to continue the wide-ranging talk about human rights and universal human rights issues. The exhibition is free from 10 am to 6 pm except Mondays. For details, please contact the Gangdong Art Center (Tel.02-440-0500).
