The Gangdong-gu Office opened at 1979. About 37 years have passed since its opening. As time passed, there were various needs regarding administrative issues, resulting in changes in the organization. The administration tasks became larger in scale and specific, but the office building was too small to handle them. There was no choice for the 9 departments out of 30 to rent spaces near the building to do their tasks. The scattered departments weren’t a good environment for both the staff and the citizens who visited the office. To unite the departments into one, a new building was required. Unfortunately, a huge budget followed the construction. Gangdong-gu decided to remodel the building and purchase the old Gangdong-police department building. It will be newly constructed as “The Second Office”. And now, last October 23, there was a “Second Office” opening ceremony to celebrate the uniting of the scattered departments. They all finished moving into the new building. The “Second Office” remodeling was put into action thanks to the fund supported by the government. It was designated as the “2017 Public Building Green-Remodeling Supporting Project”. What is “Green Remodeling?” It refers to the remodeling of buildings so it has higher energy efficiency, leading to the reduction of heating fees. Gangdong-gu installed solar panels on the walls of the buildings and utilized insulators. The insulators are 1.5 times more effective than the current construction standards! As a result, the energy efficiency levels increased from 4 to 1++, and energy use was reduced to 65%. Not only that, the old walls around the offices were tore down, and new facilities for recreation are now opened to citizens. There are also communities for sharing information in an open manner. The office rooftops and patio are now gardens. We can now enjoy nature in the middle of the city! The best thing about the “Second Office,” is that it didn’t tear down the cells used in the Gangdong police department. It used them as designing factors for the new building. The dark Panopticon now became a warm place for the citizens. Happiness + Café (I got everything Gangdong) opened here, where 4 physically challenged people work as employees. They are young people who finished attending the professional barista classes in the vocational school for the disabled. It opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. You can try out good coffee at a cheap price and look around the gallery arranged around the café. The old Office now became a place for citizens, utilizing a wise tactic, “Green Modeling.” Look after the future of the new Gangdong office! |
