Gangdong-gu will help the Migration of Street Cats
2017-11-07 Lee Won Yeul
Gangdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Yeon-sik) will launch a road cat migration project in Dunkin Island.
According to the Gu on November 7th, the city will carry out related support projects from this month so that the cats will not be flustered after their habitat disappear due to the reconstruction project of the Dun-chon Jugong apartments. In order to do this, the local residents also made a preparatory meeting named “Council for the Happy Migration of Local Cats” in June last year.
The project is supported by the apartment village council, preparation groups, and animal protection NGO named KARA.
The city will have all cats receive neutering operations prior to migration. The number of non-neutered cats in the Dun-chon Jugong area is about 60. All of their neutering operations are expected to be completed within 26 days of this month. The city also established banners with support groups to prevent stray cat abuse in the area. There is also the so-called 'Stray Cat Feeding Station' that will provide resting space for tired cats during the migration process. In addition, the organization holds regular round-table meetings and discuss issues that may arise during the migration of cats. "This project will be the first case to consider the natural ecosystem. Historically reconstruction has always been strictly human-centered in our country. We will find a way to coexist with animals," the Gu official said. "Our local government, as a first precedent of such movement, will set an example for other local governments."
