As the temperature drops every day, it gets clearer that the autumn has fully arrived. To appreciate this wonderful time of the year, how about an excursion at Gangdong-gu Herb Astronomical park with your loved ones? Herb Astronomical Park (Mount 94, Dunchon-dong), which opened in 2006, is located at the foot of Ilja Mountain, in Gildong, Gandong-gu. When you go up the hill starting from the entrance of the herb astronomical park, the herb fragrance picked up by the wind tickles the tip your nose. The entire park, of 25,500 square meters, is filled with over 150 kinds of herbs and trees including camomile, rosemary, lavender and lemon grass. The park is largely divided into the innder and the outer garden. The inner garden is shaped round like the sky, and the outer garden is an angular shape like the earth (traditionally in Korean belief, the sky was considered round, while the earth was considered square). The innter garden, composed of "Samwon (three fences)" - Tamiwon, Jamiwon and Chunxiwon - which are the names of the oriental constellation is full of herbs. In front of each herb there is a brief description card that lets you learn about its origins and uses. On the floor, there are 282 LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps that produce constellation lights. Photozones are a great place to make memories, with nature as background. As you walk in from the main entrance, past the outdoor stage and to the greenhouse, you will spot a small astronomical observatory. You can observe the sun, moon, stars, and planets through the telescope. The observatory dome can be opened 360 degrees which enables us to view various constellations. On the other hand, the herb greenhouse on the other side of the outer garden has about 50 kinds of herbs. You can feel the fresh green energy throughout the four seasons. In Herb Astronomical Park, "Star of Stars Festival" is held once a year. It is a great opportunity to experience a variety of herbs during the day, and make astronomical observations at night while getting lectures on stars and planets. The beautiful night view of the herb astronomical park, laced with fragrant herb scents and stars is a fantastic dating spot for young people. In addition, the park is also used as a herb training center. 'Herb School Garden Farm', where you can learn the basic theory on herbs and learn practical herb growing theories such as how to grow and use herb,is availabe from May to August. The 'Explore Planet Friends' program, which allows you to experience the mysteries of the universe, runs from May to November. The program is popular and is available for signup at the Gangdon-gu office, on first-come-first-served basis. To get to Hub Astronomical Park, take a connecting bus (112, 30-3, 341) from Chunho Station entrance 6 and Gangdong Station entrance 4 (on the Subway Line 5), get off at the Kangdongzai Plaza Apartment Stop, and walk for about 10 minutes.
