The Cheonho Underground Road, a chronic traffic congestion area, will be revamped 21years after its construction

- Filled into surface road by the end of 2018
- BRT lane extended to the southern part of the Cheonho Bridge from El wedding hall crossroad

The Cheonho Underground Road(CUR), which has been blamed for causing chronic traffic congestion, will be removed by the end of next year, if done fast. The Seoul Metropolitan Office(SMO) is planning to fill the CUR into the surface road and build the Bus Rapid Transit(BRT) lane on it.

On October 9th, the SMO revealed that it recently contracted ‘The plan for filling the CUR and constructing the BRT lane’.

The CUR, with its length of 335 meters, was built to facilitate the fast connection between the Gangdong province and the central city in 1997. However, as the local environment and traffic flows change, it is now considered a major problem causing the chronic traffic congestion.

The CUR occupies 2 out of 5 lanes in each direction. Since the BRT lane is cut off at the CUR, all the buses running 22 routes have to be jammed into the other 3 lanes. In addition, around the CUR, there are many sites inducing traffic jams; E-mart, Hyundai department store and the public parking lot. Consequently, it often takes more than 10 minutes to make a left turn toward Jamsil at the intersection.

Pedestrians also experience difficulties since there is no crosswalk around the CUR.

The CUR is also blamed for hampering the local business. Local store owners complain that the CUR disconnect the Seongnae Food Alley from the Cheonho Rodeo Street and that the Seongnae Food Alley lost attraction as a result.

The SMO reviewed the plan to remove the CUR in 2009 but concluded its lacking the economic feasibility at that time.

However, the situation has changed as the traffic using the CUR diminishes with the opening of alternative routes such as Guri-Amsa Bridge. The SMO resumed the feasibility study last year as the Gangdong-gu office proposed the removal of the CUR. After the feasibility study, the expert advisory committee in March recommended that the CUR, failing to perform its original mission, had better be removed to enhance the effectiveness of the public transportation and the convenience of pedestrians.

The SMO is planning to fill the CUR, reconstruct the surface road and extend the BRT lane as long as 1.2 kilometers from the El wedding hall intersection to the southern part of Cheonho Bridge. The extension is supposed to finish by December, 2018.

The SMO commented “The difficulties caused by the ambulatory disconnection between Cheonho-dong and Seongnae-dong will be relieved and the continuity of the BRT system from Cheonho to Hanam will be secured.”
