Subject Napping Contest, Lazy Film Festival…”Playing well is also the Youth’s Culture”

‘Napping Contest?’
It’s one of the ‘Gangdong-gu Youth Week’ programs, taking place at the Youth Maru Sangil Center, Gangdong-gu Sangil-dong, on 21st to 23rd. It is being held as the title of ‘The Youth’s Temperature’ and there are many interesting programs included such as ‘Lazy Film Festivals’ and ‘Cart Rider Contest’ Of course, there are some serious lectures like ‘Youth’s life and love in the AI world’, but normally there are programs with bright ideas.
These are totally the work of 4 Youth Place managers, including Kwon Sunwoo(31), who is in charge of this program and chief manager of the Youth Maru Sangil Center. Kwon says “As the world is so competitive, many young men think taking as something making them left behind.” He also adds that “Napping Contest is the program to send message to the youth ‘You’ve worked hard, and rest well.”
Opened on December 22nd at Sangil-dong High-tech Business Complex, Youth Maru Sangil Center is the second made multi cultural space for the youth by Gangdong-gu, following Sungnae Center which opened on October 17th. This space is 84 pyeong and it has been doing consulting and education about ‘foundation and employment’ and playing role as ‘a source to make new youth culture’ for the last 8 months. Through 6 programs every month, the center is widening the scope of youth to job applicants, office workers and housewives, and that of youth culture to finding a position, making relationships, bookclubs, playing. Kwon states that “According to various ordinances, people below 39 years old are the youth.”, and “Nowadays, people regard employment as the only youth culture, and this is because the content of it has reduced significantly.”
Let’s focus on one of Sangil Center’s programs, ‘Music and Physical Activities of the Firm’. They fly paper planes, play dart contest toward workers at lunch time. The programs are so popular that 30-50 workers make lines to participate. It reminds us that workers are also one of the youth we should pay attention to.
In fact, Kwon has lived real challenging life in competitive Korea society. He already had his own firm(studying center) in 2010, which is the year he came back to school after being discharged from Korean army, and he earned an income of 4,000,000 won every month. He spent his days studying at college on days and teaching math to children at the studying center at nights. One day, he offered the president of education consulting firm to do unpaid internships. After 8 months of unpaid internships and 8 months of ‘800,000 won paid internships’, he was able to become a full-time employee of the firm at the time of graduation. Last year, he quitted the firm and founded his own education consulting firm named ’45 do lab’.
When Kwon was offered to manage the Sangil Center, members of his firm dissuaded him from accepting the position. The reason for them doing so was that the firm is still new-born, and ‘making new youth culture’ is too challenging. But Kwon accepted the position to ‘have continuous and bigger goals’. The challenging life he has lived is maybe the reason why he knows that “his model is not representing the whole youth” and broadens the youth culture.
Kwon’s present ‘challenging goal’ is widening the new youth culture sprouting in Gangdong-gu to the whole country. People from Dongdaemun-gu, Daegu, Sunchon, Wanju are already visiting Sangil Center and many other local governments are showing interest. Kwon also participated in ‘Citizen Talk Show for Creating Youth Place’ on August in Sunchon.
“I am thinking of making curriculum for raising space manager of youth spaces all over the country. If the place like Youth Maru Sangil Center is spread to the whole country, I think that we can get more messages of the Korean youth by comparing data of the youth of Gangdong-gu and that of Sunchon or Wanju.”
The dream of the youth dreaming new youth culture is actualizing little by little, every day, at Youth Maru Sangil Center.
