Subject The 1st Gwangjin Bridge Festival

The 1st Gwangjin Bridge Festival
_co-hosted by Gwangjin-gu and Gangdong-gu

Since Gwangjin-gu and Gangdong-gu are contiguous just across a bridge, like ‘The Weaver girl and the Cowherd’ tale, they co-hosted the first ‘Gwangjin Bridge Festival’ at Gwangjin Brdige on August 26th, from 3 p.m to 9 p.m.
Especially, the highlight of the festival was ‘Gijisi Juldarigi’, which had started from 6 p.m. Gijisi Juldarigi is a traditional festival which symbolizes communality, and it has descended up today since about 500 years ago in Gijisi-ri, Songak-eup, Dangjin-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. Also, in 1982, the festival became one of the state-designated cultural properties and is an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Juldarigi rope, which had been made up of thick stem rope and double rows rope that enables people to pull it, was 50 meters long and five tons in weight. It was specially brought in from Gigisi-ri for the festival. To shape ‘Ojakgyo’ consists of crows and magpies, inhabitants of each gu wore black and white-colored clothes and enjoyed pulling the rope, producing harmony and unity between two autonomous boroughs.
Also, various kinds of performances took places and brightened up the atmosphere.
Kim Gidong, the head of Gwangjin-gu, said “It was great time for everyone to enjoy and hang together, through a diversity of meaningful programs like Gijisi Juldarigi and cultural performances with participation of inhabitants of Gwangjin-gu and Gangdong-gu. We will keep trying our best for the festival to become a chance of planning harmony and carrying out cultural exchanges between both boroughs.
