Subject Gangdong gu, hosting a breast feeding campaign

WHO(the World Health Organization) and UNICEF designated August 7th the World breast feeding day to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world. The rate of breast feeding in Korea is only up to 18.3%, about half less than the average rate of breast feeding in the whole world, which is 38%. This is mainly because of lack of breast feeding places in public, shortage of mother’s milk due to wrong breast feeding, and the increase of entry of women in public affairs. On August 7th, at CheonHo station, there was a breast feeding campaign. The main purpose of this campaign was to overcome the prejudice of people looking coldly at breastfeeding in public places and to make it possible for kids to get breast feeding whenever they’re hungry. In this campaign, twenty lactating women in Gangdong-Gu took actions. Even mothers whose children already stopped getting breast feeding participated by holding dolls instead of babies to emphasize the right of breast feeding in public. The head of Gangdong gu said “This campaign will be the chance of awakening the importance of breast feeding and enhancing the awareness of it in public places.” He also mentioned he’ll work harder on improving the rate of breast feeding so that children can grow healthy and happily.
It is known that breastfeeding helps a child’s health because there is immunity substance and antibody in mother’s milk. Moreover, it is important to stabilize a child’s emotions. Also, it can help prevent osteoporosis, breast cancer and ovarian cancer and have the effect of gaining weight for mothers. For those who are unfamiliar or have difficulty in breast feeding, Gangdong-Gu health center is providing breast feeding clinic and trying to encourage it.
