10th of August, at Seoul Gangdong-gu Office’s auditorium. Chief of Gangdong-gu, Lee Hae Shick, participated in a regional conference referred to as ‘Gangdong School Parent Helper Committee,’ highlighting that parents, in cooperation with Gangdong-gu, should contribute to constructing a healthy educational environment. He expressed his volition to actively support the finances and administration when parents raise their ideas about methods to enhance the educational environment. Including 62 members of the Helper Committee, about 80 people in total filled the auditorium. Questions about educational issues including ‘absolute evaluation of College Scholastic Ability Test(Suneong)’, ‘school violence’ were discussed, and suggestions about the current implementation of a project that Seoul-si is promoting were proposed in the conference. Chief Lee emphasized that “the citizens’ democratic capability has grown immensely since the previous year’s candlelight rally. Participation of citizens is crucial in various areas including administration and education.” Gangdong-gu has organized the ‘Gangdong School Parent Helper Committee’, consisted of parents of elementary and middle school students, for the first time in the current year and has started operating it. It is for the purpose of enhancing the possibility of reflecting various requests and opinions of schools and the region’s education systems. This group is comprised of 62 parents of 32 different elementary and middle schools. The official of Gangdong-gu Office explained that “we would monitor status of the assistance, which is promoted by Gangdong-gu, for the educational systems and various methods would be taken to solve problems of education in the current society.” It was 2016 when Gangdong-gu was selected as an Innovating Educational Section. The City of Seoul and Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education are assisting 1 billion won for 25 districts that were selected as an Innovating Educational Section, hanging out a slogan stating that ‘the world is a school’. Gangdong-gu is enforcing 35 businesses in total, involving the ‘reckless try’ to let elementary, middle and high school students to voluntarily arrange groups and plan projects they would like to conduct. This year, Gangdong-gu is expected to establish another committee with the ‘Gangdong School Parent Helper Group’ playing the primary role. The suggestions from this committee would be directly reflected to the educational business plan of 2018. Along with this, if the ‘Gangdong School Parent Helper Committee’ provides a business plan and submits it, financial aspect could be supported by the Gangdong-gu Office. In the current state, through KaKao Talk, Chief Lee continuously contacting with the parents. Chief Lee expresses his opinion that “it is meaningful that parents are voluntarily participating in establishing educational policies in this present situation where extremely standardized education has been showing its constraints and where the cooperation of various educational systems and the regional education community is becoming essential.”In addition, he added by stating that he expects the active participation of communities. |
