An improvement of the residential environment for the elderly who live alone in Gandong-gu
A large percentage of the elderly who live alone do not regularly attend welfare centers for senior citizens. Some of them suffer from severe depression. These elders usually meet their family once or twice a year. Some of these people have disconnected social relationships. They are just spending every day after day waiting to leave the world. Due to economic difficulties, elders are not eating proper meals every day. From now on, there will be more people living alone due to the decrease of population, so this problem will become more crucial for our society to solve. There should be more support and attention from the government and families.
Gangdong-gu is providing a ‘residential environment improvement project’ to accommodate elderly residents living in poor conditions; a more comfortable residential environment is going to be provided for the elderly who are struggling through economic hardships. Especially for the elderly who live alone.
Currently, about 80% of the elderly who live alone living alone in Gangdong-gu are living in retirement houses, and are complaining about their hard and uncomfortable residential environment.
Due to this Gangdong-gu is planning to set up handrails, light control devices, mosiquito nets, anti-slip mats, LED lights, and other daily equipment for the development of the residential environment of the elderly. Suggesting that this would lead the lives of the elderly to less uncomfortable lives.
Employees in the Ganddong-gu office say that, “We hope that the inconvenience of living alone will be alleviated by the new service the office is providing for the elderly who live alone. And also, the office will provide a customized welfare service for the elderly who live alone and build a secure welfare net.
