Subject Do You Want to Hear the Story of Rooftop Cats?

Cats with different eye colors and wearing coats came to Sungahn annex’s rooftop, carrying different stories. We don’t know where or when they were born, but they are living together at a cozy rooftop house, healing each other’s scar. It’s the story of the temporary shelter of alley cats,‘Eoul Shelter’, which is recently built by Gangdong-gu at the rooftop of its office building.

They held the sign at the shelter adding korean traditional word ‘Eoul’ which means ‘different creatures live together’. They used this word because they wanted these cats who came to the shelter with different outlooks, characters, and stories to hang along well with each other.

Also, they hoped people to coexist with these cats, too. ‘Eoul Shelter for Alley Cats’ is the place where kittens expecting adoptation and wounded cats ‘stay shortly’ in order to ‘heal their scars, both physically and mentally’.The constructor of redeveloping Goduk-dong, Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., sponsored the shelter. It has a self-assembly container design, and about 15 cats can stay at the shelter. As the news of Eoul Shelter is knowned, its housekeeping is increasing.

There is a company which made the cat tower that cats love, and there is even a constructor who wants to build a fence for the safety of these cats. Thankful helpers are keep contacting the shelter. Gangdong-gu cat moms are maintaing the shelter for volunteer.

In the weekends, students of Gangdong and Sunsa high school and employees of private companies visit the shelter and clean the cats’ playground. They clean the interior of the shelter and cats’ toilet, and fill water and food for cats. Volunteers say that when taking after the cats in the sunlight, they feel comfortable and forget about everyday problems. Isn’t this a ideal relationship between animals and humans hanging along with each other?

Recently our district made , the first local governmet animal official blog, managed by animal welfare team. It’s in order to collect and share pet information, animal welfare policy and business information scattered around the Internet. The blog’s name ‘The Story of Gangdong-gu’ is named after ‘Eoul Shelter for Alley Cats’.

When you visit the ‘The Story of Gangdong-gu(http://blog.naver.com/gd_animal)’ , you can see the five main menus, ▲new story ▲pets ▲feeding room of alley cats ▲adoptation campaign ▲local information. They introduce the district’s animal welfare policy and relecant festivals. They also shows animals’ instincts, animal language, health common knowledge, educating skills, etc.

We hope that ‘The Story of Gangdong-gu’ plays role of making people realize the importance to communicating with pets and having animal welfare and eventually spreading life-respecting culture. Twins, newborn sprouts, alley cats, pets waiting their owner at home, they are all different. Every creatures are sole. That’s maybe the reason why life is valuable and noble.

‘We can assume the country’s moral level by seeing the way a citizen of the country treats animals.’ -Mahatma Gandhi-

We Gangdong-gu will keep try to make value of life respect comes true, exceeding animal welfare.
