Subject Experiece ecology in our neighborhood!

In Gangdong-gu, a beautiful brook, Godeokcheon flows in the middle of apartment buildings. A special learning program was held in this stream on the last Sunday of July. A guide specialized in natural environment explained the features of insects living around freshwater streams to children.

Children listened to the sound of nature with open minds and twinkling eyes. They played with their friends and observed freshwater life in and around the stream. They caught and then freed fish. They learned how to imitate owl sounds using their hands.

Gangdong-gu has been providing ecology-experiencing programs since May at Godeokcheon stream and Dunchon marsh for Gangdong-gu residents. The well-reserved regional resource now became a source for education, allowing people to experience nature. You can observe nature and gain interest in marshy areas and streams here, also known as "Nature's treasure box." for the diversity of freshwater organisms.

Godeokcheon is a regional stream that flows straight through Gangdong-gu Sangil-dong, Gangil-dong, and Godeok-dong. It is known for its well-preserved natural environment. Walking trails and bicycle trails were built, and a variety of trees and flowers planted. That's why it's a popular place for residents to relax and cool down.

Gangdong-gu plans to hold monthly theme event around Godeokcheon stream. The theme of August is 'the singers in the forest', September, 'Autumn bugs' and October, 'the voyage of seeds'. The event is held from 2 to 4 pm on every Sunday. At Duncheon Marsh, designated as the ecology and landscape preservation area by Seoul City in 2000, an ecology exploration program is being held.

Duncheon Marsh is maintained by pure gushout water, a rare case seen in a big city like Seoul. Land species and aquatic species create together a perfectly balanced environment. Small but rare, Japanese alder trees inhabit there. In addition, there are dusky thrushes, gray-headed woodpeckers and goldcrests. Those species are hard to find in Korea. Ecology exploration programs are held until October every other week on Saturdays, starting at 10 am. An ecologist affiliated to Duncheon Marsh Management Council runs the program. About 15 people are able to participate, as long as the environment isn't damaged.

Both programs are free! Anyone who wishes to join just has to visit the Gangdong-gu homepage and make reservation at the online reservation corner. Nature isn't that far away. Let's enjoy our summer vacation at Duncheon Marsh and Godeokcheon stream with our children!
