Subject Gangdong-gu's efforts to make local residents cooler

As the sweltering heat continues to increase nationwide, Gangdong-gu inflates the rest center from 227 to 234 to minimize heat damage. Gangdong-gu added a total of seven rest centers including Godeok Daewoo apartment’s administrative office and senior citizen hall, 강동 농협(Gangdong Nonghyup) Myeongil Station, Godeok Branch Office and 새마을 금고(The Saemaeul finance firm) four Seongnae, Cheonho banks. This means that Gangdong-gu will run a total of 234 rest centers including 18 community centers, 117 senior citizen halls, 13 regional child centers, 5 welfare centers and 81 civilian facilities like banks. Also, to minimize inconvenience among residents seeking rest center, it conducts the on-site inspection for two weeks starting July 31. They will check out the overall operational status like the status of sign attachment and air conditioner’s operating state and they will make a comfortable place to relax at any time An officer said “The rest shelter that anyone who is local is available anytime, and anywhere. We hope that people who are exhausted during the summer heat wave use this shelter a lot.”
There is another effort to minimize heat damage. In preparation for the scorching heat in summer, the shade canopy was installed at 11 locations around the crosswalk. Gangdong-gu expected the heat wave to heat up this year and it selected a suitable place that has a large floating population and no shades like major crosswalk, crossway, traffic island which will not block both pedestrian and driver’s vision. It is planning to add ten more shade canopies. Lee Hae-sik, head of the District Office, said that “We are going to continue to expand the installation and the safety management will be thoroughly maintained.”
