Gangdong-gu Office Gathers Momentum to Execute Essential Projects by Securing ₩39.4M from Seoul’s FY 2023 Budget

- The budget includes ₩200 million for reexamining feasibility study on the direct linkage project of subway line 5 with another line

- Other large-scale projects, including maintenance on the Amsa History Park, slated to be pushed ahead smoothly

Gangdon-gu Office (head: Lee Soo-hee) has secured KRW 39.4 million ($30,407) out of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s FY 2023 budget – after requesting support from both the city government and city council – in an attempt to procure resources necessary for a large-scale investment businesses and implement major projects planned during the four-year-long civil service period of the current district administrative office, led by Lee Soo-hee who was elected in last year’s 8th local elections.

Out of such secured budget, about ₩200 million will be used as a service charge for the reexamination of a feasibility study on the direct linkage project of subway line 5 with another line. The project has been long desired by the district residents. Subway line 5 running through Gangdong-gu is splitted into two separated lines from Gangdong Station, one bound for Hanam Geomdansan Station and another bound for Macheon Station. Passengers have no choice but to make sure if they get on the right train depending on the destination they are heading to. This prompted inconveniences for passengers to wait twice as long for the right train to arrive and to suffer from a congestion.

In that sense, Gangdong-gu Office has stepped up to resolve the problem by actively pushing forward with the direct linkage project of subway line 5 with another line. Taken its toll, the project once had been declined by the Ministry of Economy and Finance in August last year to be the subject of a preliminary feasibility study. However, Gangdong-gu Office has seized an opportunity once again to push forward with the project by taking advantage of the secured budget.

The budget also includes ₩100 million as a service charge for a feasibility study on the Skywalk construction project designed to build a waterfront trail. Gangdong-gu Office said that the waterfront in the district, enjoying its ecological environment along with Bam Island on the Hangang River, cherishes true beauty when it’s viewed from the river. In that sense, Gangdong-gu Office is planning to implement an eco-friendly construction project organized to build a skywalk bridge and an observatory platform on the waterfront.

Other financing includes a project building a Godeok pedestrian overpass connecting Saemteo Park and Bangjuk Park with ₩2.9 million and a project designed to restore ecological environment of Godeok stream and to create afforestation around Godeok-dong by planting herbaceous flowers and trees with ₩1.4 million.

A bankroll targeted at a smooth execution of an on-going large-scale investment businesses is also reflected in the budget. Following businesses and funds are examples that are to be executed further: a maintenance worth ₩3.9 million for the Amsa History Park destined to be completed in June 2026, a construction of Gangdong Public Rehabilitation Center for the Disabled worth ₩1.8 million, a construction of the second public Sports Center for Residents worth ₩3 million, and a construction of Gangdong Forest Library worth ₩2.5 million.

“In order to finance budget, we have convinced Seoul city government officials and city council members the necessity of executing core projects in the district,” said Lee Soo-hee, head of Gangdong-gu Office. “On behalf of all residents in the district, I would like to send my heartfelt gratitude to members of both Seoul city government and the city council for their full support in funding for the sake of the district’s development.”
