This summer, the Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung Hun) residents made mosquito repellent air fresheners by reusing the ice packs and delivered them to the underprivileged to show their love for the neighbors and the environment.

The mosquito repellent air freshener making was conducted as part of their Reusable Ice Pack Collection System, which is one of the eco-friendly projects of Gangdong-gu, and the Resource Circulation Education Program for Schools, a program that promotes the reuse and recycling of resources in daily life.

Last July, Gangdong-gu, together with the civic organizations including community security councils, residents' committees for autonomous districts, and district head councils, conducted a mosquito repellent air freshener making class at the community centers in Gangil-dong, Amsa 1-dong, Godeok 2-dong and Seongnae 3-dong. More than 140 residents participated in the class this day.

To make the mosquito repellent air fresheners, they removed the contents of used ice packs and put them in glass bottles together with colored paints. They also added 10 to 20 drops of essential oils that repel bugs such as cinnamon, eucalyptus, peppermint and lemongrass. The residents made at least 400 mosquito repellent air fresheners.

After packing the air fresheners with a wrapper, the community officials (welfare officials of each community service center) delivered the air fresheners to the low-income single-person households and the beneficiary households. Also, in preparation for the heatwaves this summer, the officials checked the residential environment and safety of the beneficiaries, and informed them how to respond to a heatwave.

"We are practicing resource circulation by making mosquito repellent air fresheners with used ice packs. We will make our continuous efforts so that the underprivileged spends this summer healthier and cooler," said an official at the Gangdong-gu Office.
