Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung Hun) has installed a mini smart farm at the urban agriculture complex called Farmix Center (314, Godeok-ro, Gangdong-gu) to presents the future of urban agriculture.

A smart farm refers to a farm operated with information and communications technology (ICT) that controls the farm environment automatically, therefore increasing the production efficiency.

The smart farm installed at the Farmix Center is a 5.4㎡ three-tier plant cultivator. Leafy vegetables including Fidel, Charles and Red grace are growing in this farm. Multiple factors such as light, temperature, humidity, and nutrient solutions are automatically controlled by the smart technology. In addition, it also enables stable plant growing without being affected by blight, harmful insects or seasons.

Gangdong-gu will add a hands-on smart farm program to its urban agriculture education, and provide an opportunity in which residents can experience urban agriculture indoors during winter, which is an off season for farming.

An official at the Gangdong-gu Office said, “The mini smart farm is expected to bring a new type of pleasure to visitors at the Farmix Center. We will make efforts to present future agricultural models to the residents through our new technology-based smart farm and to promote a smart future urban agriculture.”

The Farmix Center consists of a coffee shop, a seed library, lecture rooms, and more. It is open from 10AM to 7PM, Mondays to Saturdays. The outdoor facilities include: Farmix Garden, an urban type garden, Bee Farm, Exhibit Hall of Urban Agricultural History and Future Center (Smart Farm). Visitors can enjoy a variety of urban agriculture contents.
