Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung Hun) installed string lights on the side roads of the shopping district at Kang Full Cartoon Street, aiming to improve its night view. A lighting ceremony for the new starlight street was held on July 3.

The district of Cheonho-daero 168-gil in Gangdong-gu was formerly an old residential area. The area was then decorated with at least 50 murals from the scenes of Kang Full’s cartoons, thus transforming the area into a "Cartoon Street." Last year, the Kang Full Cartoon Street was selected as a target area for the 2020 Seoul Landscape Improvement Project, and this project, commenced in January 2020, will give an opportunity for the Kang Full Cartoon Street to be reestablished as a pedestrian-friendly culture street by December 2021.

The starlight street construction project for the Kang Full Cartoon Street was conducted to maintain a pleasant environment until the Kang Full Cartoon Street improvement project is completed in 2021, and to ensure pedestrians’ safety at night. String lights were installed on the 250-meter-long side roads of the shopping district to create a sentimental and emotional atmosphere under the starlights.

The starlight street construction project is intended to attract more pedestrians at night by improving its night view. It is expected to vitalize the local economy at the Kang Full Cartoon Street, where it experienced economic recession after the spread of COVID-19.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the lighting ceremony was held brief and simple—lighting countdown and photo taking—with a small number of residents..

Mayor Lee Jung Hun said, “The starlight street construction project for the Kang Full Cartoon Street is a meaningful project, since it was originated from residents’ idea and cooperation. We will put forth the efforts to make the Kang Full Cartoon Street a pleasant and attractive pedestrian-friendly street in this city full of apartments.”
