Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung-hun) newly added two model cases in the Map of Government Innovation Models, established by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to promote model innovation cases. With the new additions, Gangdong-gu now has the largest number of model cases registered in its name with a total of 10 model cases. It is a great achievement that enabled it to have won gold medal for two consecutive months since the end of August. The newly added model cases of Gangdong-gu are an ice pack recycling system, and the open governmental building operation project.
The ice pack recycling system is an excellent model that contributes to environmental protection by allowing local residents to place unused ice packs in the ice pack collectors installed in the community service centers to be recycled. This system was first put into practice by Gangdong-gu. The program won the excellent award at the 2019 Seoul City Creative Administration. It is also being benchmarked in Seongdong-gu, and Songpa-gu.
The open government office building project involves remodeling old government office buildings to make them more environmentally-friendly with energy-saving features. This involved transforming the district office square which was conventionally used as parking lots to 'an open field', which is 1,300 square meters of grass field. The open grass field is open to the public as a space for family leisure where children can freely run around. For this reason, the project won the 2019 Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards, and the Gold Award in the category of Innovative Government Administration (held by the US Stevie Awards), and the Grand Prize at the Seoul City Design Solar Energy Contest (held by Seoul City).
The model cases of Gangdong-gu that helped its winning of gold medals include People and Story-Centered 'Gangdong Type Urban Regeneration', 'Urban Agriculture' Based on the Coexistence of People and Nature, Healthy City Gangdong, 'Dream Smile' of Children in Senior Citizen Centers, Labor Rights Center, Happy Gangdong Living Harmoniously with Companion Animals, Don't Worry about Your Uniforms Dear 'High Schooler Uniform Purchase Expenses Subsidy', and Inspection of Dust Scattering Construction Sites Using Drones.
In particular, the 'Gangdong Type Urban Regeneration' project, which involved the formation of Gangpul Cartoon Mural Alley, Angel Workshop, and Amsadong Anchor Facility, won the Grand Prize in the category of urban regeneration at the 2019 Local Government Manifesto Excellent Model Contest held in July. The healthy city, urban agriculture, and companion animal policies are also being recognized for their excellence, winning the World Health Organization (WHO) Healthy City Award, the Korea Environmental Award, Korea Pet Culture Award, and so on.
Lee Jung-hun, the Mayor of Gangdong-gu, stated, "Gangdong is currently undergoing a large-scale regeneration project, and will become a district inhabited by 550 thousand residents in 5 years. We will continue our efforts to make Gangdong a better place and a place of innovation."
The Government Innovation Models refer to innovative policy models that realize social values, extend civic participation and cooperation, and increase public trust in the government in order to restore the public interest of society. The Map of Government Innovation Models is a feature available on the website 'The 1st Government Innovation Street' established by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to promote awareness of government innovation achievements. The Map shows 267 model cases registered by 145 local governments out of the total 243 local governments in Korea. ※ Web site: https://www.innogov.go.kr/ucms/ingov/gud/locGovList.do?menuNo=300089 <Related Photos>
