On September 27, Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung-hun) won the Excellent Award (awarded by the Chairman of Maeil Business Newspaper) at the 8th Korea Knowledge Awards held in Youngbingwan Hall of the Shilla Hotel.

Jointly held by Ministry of Public Administration and Safety, Maeil Business Newspaper, and Samjong KPMG each year to coincide with the World Knowledge Forum, the Korea Knowledge Awards is an event of the highest prestige in Korea that grants awards to excellent institutions in the areas of knowledge administration and business management targeting public administration agencies, public institutions, and private companies.

Gangdong-gu was selected for the Excellent Award in the category of knowledge administration, receiving positive recognition for its leadership in knowledge-based administration such as solving community issues through creative methods based on knowledge administration, and promoting knowledge-based administration by supporting employee self-help groups in the forms of a study guild and employee research club.

The point-based cooperation program and cooperation system in Gangdong-gu act as a platform through which office employees can share work-related knowledge, and are excellent examples of the knowledge administration culture. In addition, Gangdong Archive has been established to accumulate knowledge of different departments to contribute to performance improvements. It is also running a smart city employee research club to reinforce employee capacity in preparation for the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Model examples of knowledge activity suggested at the awards were the 'Gangpul Cartoon Mural Alley' formation project and 'Seungryong's House' which have become the center of urban regeneration, and arts and culture in the district. Use of drones to inspect construction sites of the regeneration project is the first case of using drones in construction sites in Seoul, and is another creative model reflected in the policy through the employee idea contest.

In particular, the Gangdong Office employee study guild members received special attention as they worked as interpreters for the foreign committees at the Healthy City International Forum held on September 25 and 26. It was highlighted as a case of knowledge administration leading to policy application.

Lee Jung-hun, the Mayor of Gangdong-gu, stated, "With the knowledge awards as a starting point, we are going to explore various ways to vitalize and systemize knowledge management and knowledge administration within the organization.”
