Gangdong-gu will speed up the creation of the “pedestrian-friendly cultural street” with the designation of the Kang Full Cartoon Alley as a “project to be renovated in 2020” by Seoul City.

The Kang Full Cartoon Alley is a "specialized cartoon street" decorating the area near 168-gil, Cheonho-daero, where the residential environment had been poor due to the concentration of old homes, with Kang Full's 50 cartoon murals. The designation is quite meaningful because the project thrived with the help of residents, who also initiated the idea.

One billion won in budget will be invested in the project, which will be carried out for two years from January 2020 through December 2021. In the first year of its implementation, the design of the landscape will be conducted and construction will be under way for one year thereafter. The expenses will be shared evenly by Gangdong-gu and Seoul City.

Gangdong-gu plans to turn the Kang Full Cartoon Alley into a cultural street containing regional characteristics and tourism attractions through the project.

Gangdong-gu also plans to enliven the characteristics of the alley by improving the decrepit pedestrian environment and facilities to help wheelchairs and strollers run easily and by refurbishing the external space like, the retaining wall to the access road and the street furniture along Cheonho-daero. At the same time, the office will push for the creation of cultural infrastructure linking local tourism resources, like the nearby Jjukkumi Alley and the Angel Workshops, based on the results of the "Commissioned Basic Plan to Revitalize the Kang Full Cartoon Alley."

"Improving the cityscape is a key project of the 7th administration by popular vote, directly connected to people's livelihood. We will spare no effort to make the Kang Full Cartoon Alley revive as a cultural street where residents can enjoy pleasant lives and abundant culture," said Mayor Lee Jung-hun.
