Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung-hun) expanded and relocated its volunteer center on July 29 ahead of reaching 100,000 volunteers. This is intended to meet the growing desire to take part in volunteer service and beef up its hub role as a base to promote volunteer work.

The number of volunteers registered with Gangdong-gu has surpassed 95,000 and is expected to increase steadily. The volunteer center had been supporting diverse activities for volunteers like education, conferences, consultation, and experience in compliance with the increasing demand, but it has been difficult to secure an independent space as the education center and the club room have been used jointly with other departments.

So Gangdong-gu arranged a space of 324.4 square meters on the 7th floor of Herrscherwc Tower near Gangdong Station (1089, Cheonhodae-ro, Gangdong-gu) and relocated its volunteer center there, thereby raising volunteers' convenience greatly.

The new location is easy to find because it is connected directly with an exit of Gangdong Station on subway Line 5. An exclusive space for volunteers has been arranged too. The space will accommodate a large lecture room for professional education, a small lecture room for communication between volunteers and preparation for volunteer work, and a club room. A small cafeteria will also be in operation in cooperation with the Gangdong Senior Club, which is in charge of job creation for senior citizens. The opening ceremony will take place in September.

"I expect the Gangdong-gu volunteer center to play pivotal roles in expanding inhabitants' participation in volunteer service and injecting positive vigor into our region through the expansion and relocation," said Mayor Lee, and also said "I will do my best to make our society happy together by discovering and revitalizing volunteer programs through which citizens and civil servants can share their capabilities with the local community."
