Bracing for the earlier and worse than normal sweltering heat, Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung-hun) will increase the number of cooling centers where citizens can avoid the heat to 251 and run extended and nighttime cooling centers where a cooling system is in operation late into the night.

The number of cooling centers which can be used from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. everyday rose from 245 to 251. Six places—two welfare centers for the disabled, one senior citizen room, and three cultural facilities including Gangdong Arts Center—have been newly designated .

 The number of extended cooling centers increased from 54 last year to 78 this year. They will be in operation until 9 p.m. on both holidays and weekdays in the event of a heat wave alert. In the event of a heat wave warning in which the highest temperature exceeds 35 degrees for two days or more, nighttime shelters will be in operation. They will be open from 9 p.m. through 7 a.m. the following morning so citizens can take a good rest even in the tropical heat in the 23 newly designated nighttime cooling centers.

"The sultry heat is already in full swing. We will make the best use of local resources like public facilities to help all inhabitants, including weak senior citizens, cope with the scorching heat,“ Gangdong-gu Mayor Lee Jung-hun said, and also said “Feel free to use the shelters that are open to all inhabitants of the district."
