Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jung-hun) announced that it starts free distribution of an EM solution that is effective in reducing bad smells and reducing the use of detergents to its residents.

The EM (Effective Micro-organisms) solution is made through composition and cultivation of dozens of microorganisms, including lactobacillus, which are beneficial to humans. The solution, created through a fermentation process, is highly effective in removing offensive odors and preventing decomposition and oxidation.

In an ordinary household, the solution can be diluted with water to be used as a natural detergent, contributing to environmental protection as it leads to decreasing the use of chemical detergents when washing fruits or dishes. Furthermore, the dilute solution can be used for blight control for plants and unpleasant odor removal from the kitchen or the toilet.

Gangdong-gu will be distributing the EM solution from an EM distributor, where the EM solution is fermented and distributed, installed on the first floor of the Seongan Annex of the Gangdong-gu Office, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday. Residents should bring a 2-liter plastic bottle to the Clean Environment Division at the Gangdong-gu Office to receive a coin, which they should insert into the EM distributor to be provided with 1.8 liters of the solution for free.

Gangdong-gu has offered education for raising environmentally friendly awareness by EM specialists since last year to promote the understanding of the EM solution and how to use it, and has plans to continue providing the education this year.

Gangdong-gu Mayor Lee Jung-hun remarked, “In line with the improved environmental awareness of the local residents, we are distributing an EM solution that can be practically used in their lives,” and added, “For them to develop eco-friendly habits, we will continue distributing the EM solution and expand the distribution after testing its effect based on a satisfaction survey in the future.”
