Gangdong-gu’s LED Security Lights for Resident Safety$-Gangdong-gu to change security lights in Seongnae 3(sam)-dong and Myeongil 1(il)-dong residential streets to highly efficient LED lights-To change 7,323 security lights by 2021 on an annual basis for creation of a safe Gangdong

Gangdong-gu, headed by Mayor Lee Jung-hun, will change old sodium security lights in residential street alleys to highly efficient LED lights to create a safe and pleasant environment.

The existing sodium security lights made clear distinction of objects difficult due to their excessive light emission, wasted energy and were weak in terms of crime prevention.

On the other hand, the cut-off LED lights consume around half of the electric power sodium lights do but also improve the average alleyway illumination up to 15 lux while providing illumination concentrating on the streetway so as to significantly lower resident discomforts such as sleep disturbance and light glare.

Gangdong-gu has pushed ahead with this change from sodium security lights to cut-off LED lights since 2015 as part of its plans to improve residential street light environments, and a total of 4,001 security lights have been replaced.

Areas where lights will be replaced this time are residential streets in Seongnae 3(sam)-dong and Myeongil 1(il)-dong. Among the 647 originally installed sodium security lights, 560 will be replaced with cut-off LED lights to reduce the harm of light pollution due to artificial lighting and create safe streets for residents to utilize with a feeling of security at night.

Mayor Lee Jung-hun commented, “We plan to replace the 7,323 security lights installed throughout our jurisdiction with highly efficient energy-saving LED lights by 2021,” and “We will continue to strive to create a safe and pleasant Gangdong.”
