Gangdong-gu, headed by Mayor Lee Jung-hun, revealed on the September 6 that it will add the ophthalmological complications examination to the Citizen Health Point project for patients with hypertension and diabetes.

The Citizen Health Point is a project that offers continuous treatment for patients with hypertension and diabetes, currently registered at neighborhood clinics, and annually rewards up to 33,000 health points for having participated in health center training courses. Patients can use the points for tests and vaccinations. The project also helps manage the health of the chronically ill.

The additional ophthalmological complications examination is significant in preventing ophthalmological diseases of patients suffering from hypertension and diabetes. Of the top three complications and top cause of adult blindness is diabetic retinopathy, while over a 15-year struggle with hypertension may increase chances of hypertensive retinopathy with early discovery and treatment necessary through examinations.

Mayor Lee Jung-hun commented, “We will work closely with private medical institutions, including that of internal medicine, family medicine clinics, and ophthalmological clinics, for easier treatments of diseases and complications in patients with hypertension and diabetes. Ultimately, we are actively dedicated to improving upon the living habits of residents to prevent chronic illness.”
