Gangdong-gu (Mayor: Lee Hae-sik) will hold a completion ceremony for the ‘Gangdong-gu Public Meal Center (942, Dongnam-ro, Gangdong-gu)’ to actualize true urban-rural mutuality while offering safe and healthy food to the citizens on June 1 at 2 p.m.

 Gangdong-gu was selected during a trial operation for ‘Urban-Rural Mutuality Public Meals’ as an autonomous district and was publicly recruited by Seoul in March 2017, and it is the first in Seoul to run a ‘Public Meal Center’ and provide healthy food to 4,610 people at ninety-five public meal centers that include daycare centers, local children’s centers, welfare facilities and more within its jurisdiction.

 Gangdong-gu concluded a ‘Urban-Rural Mutuality Public Meal Agreement’ with Wanju-gun in May of last year. Gangdong-gu concluded a one-to-one contract with Wanju-gun to improve complicated direct transaction methods with production centers by cutting down on distribution costs and established an official provision system to supply public meal facilities with food ingredients at reasonable prices after the enforcement of safety inspections in the production, distribution and consumption stages.

 Gangdong-gu will supply citizens with healthy and safe foods at reasonable prices while providing a safe market for rural production centers to revitalize the rural economy as true urban-rural mutuality.

 The district leased a section of an environment-friendly distribution center in Garak-dong, Songpa-gu until recently to operate its Public Meal Center, but with the growing significance of foods, the Public Meal Center was moved to its new location in Godeok-dong, Gangdong-gu to continue its operations.

 The Public Meal Center is a two-story center with a total floor space of 373.07 m2. The fresh food ingredients supplied by a production center in the local government of Wanju-gun and delivered every evening are used the following day at the Public Meal Center, and on the first floor there is a warehouse, low temperature storehouse and an industrial product storehouse for the safe distribution of food as well as an office and a low temperature storehouse on the second floor.

 The Public Meal Center does not only offer the food ingredients of a public meal facility but also plans to continuously carry out various roles to actualize healthy and happy urban-rural mutuality and public meal culture by management of an order system, quality care of food ingredients, safety inspections, education related to visiting everyday foods and public meals, and urban-rural exchange and production center experiences.

 Mayor Lee Hae-sik commented, “The Public Meal Center receives healthy food ingredients from the local food production center in Wanju-gun and from the Gangdong-gu environment-friendly direct agriculture local food store ‘SingSing-Dream’ while safely purchasing food ingredients at reasonable prices to protect the food value of Gangdong-gu and actualize urban-rural mutuality.”
