Gangdong-gu has received 4 awards at the The 7th Global Conference of the AFHC (Alliance for Healthy Cities) hosted by the City of Wonju.

Having been selected as an outstanding example in the categories of “teenage suicide prevention” and “reduction of food waste within the city”, Gangdong-gu has been honored with the <WHO Healthy City Award> for 3 consecutive times since 2012. In addition, it also received the <WHO Achievement Award>, awarded to cities that have made significant contributions to the growth of healthy cities, and the <Healthy City Growth Award> selected by AFHC.

Gangdong-gu has dispatched “counseling experts” to all middle schools for students to ask for help and share their concerns and worries at any time and also carried out various programs in which students can take the initiative and actively participate.
Students have also exhibited a high level of satisfaction in Gangdong-gu’s “Needs Call Counseling Center”, which aims to deter them from committing suicide and making rash decisions, and, because of this, the center received a high score in the overall assessment.

Moreover, Gangdong-gu received positive reviews of its establishment of a virtuous cycle to build an eco-friendly city by reducing the amount of food waste, a chronic issue faced by cities. Reduction contests were held to improve the awareness of its residents and compost bins were distributed to recycle leftover food as compost, which can be utilized in urban farming activities.

The <Healthy City Growth Award> is awarded to healthy cities that meet all 39 items on a checklist, proposed by the Alliance for Healthy Cities, including the “degree of health infrastructure established within city”, “effectiveness of policies”, “inducing participation of residents”, “improving the awareness of local society and education” and so on.

The award carries significant meaning, especially considering that it comprehensively assesses the conditions required to possess the environment of a healthy city. This year, Gangdong-gu was awarded with Strong Action, which is one level higher than Good Dynamic that it received in 2012.
