Gangdong Arts Center (870, Dongnam-ro, Gangdong-gu, Seoul), directly managed by Gangdong-gu, celebrates its 5th anniversary on September 1st. Since it first opened in 2011, it has hosted 3,450 performances and 748 exhibits of diverse genres, having attracted more than 500,000 people and achieved 76.6% in seat occupancy. It has become the target of benchmarking not just in Seoul but nationwide as it lowers barriers of culture facilities and makes cultural arts a part of everyday lives.

Gangdong Arts Center is being reborn as a local and family-oriented performance venue that specializes in dance. On top of programs customized for a variety of social groups such as children, office workers and housewives, the center also reflects the audience’s needs to adjust schedules and increase the number of performances including <GAC Thursday Arts Stage> and <Classical Promenade Concert on Friday Night>, enabling families to enjoy cultural arts at a relatively inexpensive cost.

The center has also established an environment in which local residents can enjoy a variety of cultural art contents. Having selected “Theater Group Traveler” and “Second Nature Dance Company” as resident art groups and support them with office and practice spaces as well as regular performances to help their creative activities in addition to planning diverse cultural arts education programs to invigorate the local community. Especially for office workers who lack the time to enjoy performances, it has held its “Play Academy” in late evenings on Fridays and their new work is set to perform for the first time this October.

Moreover, the Arts Center has prepared special performances in commemoration of its 5th anniversary. Starting with the <2016 KBS Symphony Orchestra Invitation Performance> on this past 27th, the center will perform Mascagni’s <Cavalleria Rusticana>, known as a hyper-realistic masterpiece of an opera, <Mamma Mia>, which is renowned for being one of the best jukebox musicals, and <Singing is My Life>, a concert by Lee Mi-ja.

As a public theater, Gangdong Arts Center will continue to fulfill its social role for improvement of the quality of life of local residents. It will not only internally produce performances that reflect the identity of the region in cooperation with resident art groups but also newly introduce brunch concerts on weekday afternoons where music and counseling come together. Its efforts are expected to continue to attract a greater audience to its performances.
