On the 6th of May, Gangdong-gu announced that it has created a special street for night scenery, 'Genaebyeol-gil', by arranging design lights in the shopping districts in Sangil-dong. This special street will make pedestrians safe night walk by a bright and pleasant road design instead of a dark alley. The name of ‘Genaebyeol-gil’, the newly created Sangil-dong special street, was inspired by the old name of this area, Genae Village. Various lights are placed all over the street just like the name ‘byeol-gil’ which means ‘star road’, so the pedestrians can feel as if they are walking on the Milky Way in the night sky. In particular, the Sangil Girls' High School area in Sangil-dong is a street with many shopping malls, so residents and merchants had high expectations for the revitalization of the commercial district. In response, the district promoted a specialized street project in the area to capture both ‘walking safety’ and ‘increasing number of users’ and transformed it into a night time attraction. Recently, the district is creating various specialized streets in the region to revitalize commercial areas that have been stagnant due to COVID-19. Various themed streets such as 'Seonganbyeol-gil' that runs from ‘Gangpul Manga Street’ to ‘Webfoot Octopus Alley’, 'Jinhwang Road Night Lighting' built in the alley between Gildong Station and Gangdong Station, ‘Bicycle Theme Street’ and ‘Gangdong Sports Street’ are also emerging. Im Seong-hyeok, head of the District Landscape Division, emphasized, “We hope that many residents will visit ‘Genaebyeol-gil’, which is emerging as a new attraction in Sangil-dong.” |
