Subject Gangdong-gu Happiness School Project

In May last year, Amsa-dong Sunsa high school in Gangdong-gu transformed the "home base," a resting place for students, into a cultural space. The home base, located in the lobby space on each floor of the school building, has been shunned by students because the facilities have been old and dark ,and empty. Third-grade Chun Seolhwa (19), who participated in the home base improvement team, said "The previous home base had a table, but it was gloomy. She said, "It was not heated enough, so I didn't use it well, so it was just a wide corridor across," adding, "There is not enough space for other classmates to meet, so I often cause inconvenience to students who go to the classroom and study, and it was so nice to have a place to rest and talk with other classmates after changing the home base."
In May 2020, Sunsa high school spent 170 million won to change the lobby (home base) on the second, third and fourth floors of the school into a new cultural space where play, culture, and learning coexist.
Gangdong-gu has spent 5 billion won from 2018 to this year to improve 53 spaces in 43 elementary, middle, and high schools. In 2018, the district improved future computer classes and school routes to four schools and changed the entrances, corridors, and colors of 17 schools in 2019.
In 2020, 18 schools created smart libraries and amusement forests, and this year, 14 schools are creating spaces to play with nature and heal. The district plans to create a total of 60 happy school spaces by 2022.
Gangdong-gu changed the unprecedented hallway of Myogok Elementary School in Godeok-dong to a space where children can read and play together, and Gangsol Elementary School created a play and rest space in the back yard of the empty building. Hanyoung Middle School installed an open bookshelf and changed it to allow sunlight to come into the library that lacked mining.
Happiness School has good responses from parents and students, and other local governments such as Gyeongnam and Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, benchmark the Happiness School project as an example of educational administration. Last year, he received the best award in the field of revitalizing local culture and the excellence award in public design as excellent examples of the manifesto.
Kim Mi-jin, an official at Gangdong-gu's education support department, said, "Helping future generations of children's personalities and social growth begins with schools," adding, "We will continue to help create spaces tailored to the diverse needs of students."
