Subject Gangdong-gu’s multicultural space 'Dadok-Dadok' is gaining popularity

In front of a large-scale apartment complex in Godeok-dong, Gangdong-gu, a unique building including two elementary schools appeared in the middle of six schools. It is a place where an old commercial building has been refurbished, and it attracts attention from the window through which the street can be seen at a glance. The soft sofa chair facing the window, the space decorated like an indoor playground for children, and partitioned seats for teenagers stand out.

At the entrance on the first floor, there is a machine for brewing coffee, and in the backyard there is a screen that emits images and tables and chairs for gathering. After the space is closed, only places where books can be borrowed and returned, like a bank's 365 ATM, operate separately.

Gangdong-gu is expanding the complex cultural space that is a playground, a space with books, tea and rest. It is a book cafe library called 'Dadok-Dadok(Many Reading, Much Reading)'. As the name suggests, it is a space designed to deepen the bond between people through books and tea. Unlike a normal library that is quiet and solemn, you can chat over a cup of tea, relax or sleep without a book.

The Godeok branch, which opened on the 22nd, is the fourth book cafe library to be introduced. We rented a building that had been neglected for a long time and repaired it to a facility that could attract attention, and allowed us to bring in tea and drinks purchased from outside for coexistence with the nearby commercial area. On four floors, from the 1st basement level to the 3rd floor, there are about 6,000 books that can be enjoyed by children of all ages, from elementary books to general books.

Gangdong-gu opened the first Dadok Dadok store at Gildong intersection in September last year, and then opened the second store in Cheonho-dong Gobundari Traditional Market in the first half of this year. The third store has built a nest in Gucheon-myeon-ro, which is being transformed into a walking street.

Although they are grouped together under the name of reading extensively, each library has a different charm. Parents who shop at traditional markets leave their children for a while or rest their tired legs, while so-called 'Kagong people' who study at cafes can stay all day. It sells products from social economy companies and workshops, and supports lectures and small group meetings for nearby residents.

Each space is decorated with the 'Color of the Year' announced every year by global companies. The so-called spatial welfare concept of welfare for the residents was applied throughout public facilities. In the sense of 'books are the vitamin of the mind', the nickname ‘Gangdong-gu library is booktamin' was also given.

We assigned a manager along with a professional librarian and entrusted the operation. This is the reason why various programs such as dementia prevention lectures with residents' associations and making bookmarks from fallen leaves are continuously running.

Godeok branch also plans to develop various programs such as book concerts starting with 'Shadow Stimulation' for 20 families on the 28th so that all residents can participate. An official from Gangdong-gu explained, "The quality of the program is improving day by day as the management team develops various contents as if competing with each other and induces the participation of residents."

Gangdong-gu is in the midst of designing to open the 5th store in the Amsa General Market at the end of this month and the 6th store in Gil-dong. Ultimately, the plan is to increase the number of spaces to 10 so that residents can use the space 5 to 10 minutes on foot from their homes. Gangdong-gu mayor Lee Jung Hun said, "The Dadok Dadok Godeok branch is located between a large apartment complex, a residential area, and a school, so many residents will use it." We will continue to push forward various space creation projects without gaps,” he said.
