Subject Gangdong-gu’s suicide rate has devreased significantly … lower than the national average“

Gangdong-gu, Seoul, announced on the 15th that the suicide rate has reached its lowest level since 2017.

According to the data from the National Statistical Office analyzed by Gangdong-gu that day, the number of suicide deaths in Gangdong-gu last year was 21.7 per 100,000, lower than the national average (25.7 per 100,000). Among 25 districts in Seoul (22.7 per 100,000), it ranked 15th, which was significantly lower than that of 2019 (4th). This is the lowest ranking in the last 10 years.

The district analyzed that the sharp decrease in its suicide rate is the result of various projects such as finding potential risk groups for depression and intensive management of high-risk groups in the midst of an increasing number of residents complaining of depression and psychological difficulties after the outbreak of COVID-19.

Gangdong-gu’s "Life Respect Tap Dream Project" lowered the economic burden on residents for psychiatric treatment. Also, the improvement of the website of the Gangdong-gu Mental Health Welfare Center made it easy for all residents to use self-diagnosis tests for depression, anxiety, etc. Access to non-face-to-face mental health counseling has also been increased. For instance, a Kakao Talk counseling channel named "Mind Talk Talk" has been launched this year.

Mayor Lee Jung hun, head of the Gangdong-gu District Office, said, "The sharp decrease in suicide rates across the country is the result of various projects that prevent suicide." The mayor also added, "We will continue to work together to realize 'Happy Gangdong' by expanding and internalizing programs that can help prevent suicide."
