Subject Gangdong, Evolving "Women-Friendly City"

Gangdong-gu, Seoul, is taking the lead in creating a "women-friendly city" without discrimination.

Gangdong-gu announced on the 13th that since it was designated as a women-friendly city in 2016, it has not only been steadily promoting women-friendly policies, with 23 departments currently promoting 90 women-friendly projects, but is making all-out efforts to designate the second stage (development stage). "Women-Friendly City" refers to a place where women and men participate in a balanced manner in regional policies and development processes to strengthen women's capabilities, implement care and safety.

Gangdong-gu has significantly increased the number of female management officials by selecting more than half of the management officials from the planning, budget, personnel, and audit departments that lead major core projects to designate the second stage. In addition, emergency bells were installed in 27 private toilets to "create a women's safety village safe from crime," and relief homesets were provided to single female households. The dark alley environment has been improved by installing solar markers and safe mirrors in crime-prone areas in the region.

In addition, the prostitution gathering site in Cheonho-dong was demolished and the area where variant businesses in Seongnae-dong were concentrated was created as Angel Workshop Street, improving the residential environment vulnerable to crime. Care and parenting support projects to minimize the burden of raising children are also continuously expanding. The number of national and public daycare centers was expanded from 52 in 2017, to 85, and the children's play facility "I-Mom Gangdong" gradually expanded to the 7th store and the elementary care facility "Our Neighborhood Kiwoom Center" to the 5th store.

"Promoting a women-friendly city will ultimately serve as an important foundation for realizing gender equality," said Lee Jung hun, mayor of Gangdong-gu District Office. "We will do our best to create a women-friendly city created by communicating with residents to create an equal gender."
