Recently, a presentation for Gangdong-gu residents on excavation investigation of Amsadong ruins took place on June 19th. After the ruins of Amsadong were first discovered in 1925, there hadn’t been any investigation until 1970s when they discovered that Amsadong was actually a historic site of New Stone Age period. Last year, with the support from Cultural Heritage Administration and Seoul-Si, they went through a renewed excavation investigation of Amsadong ruins since it last took place forty one years ago. They discovered eight new dwelling sites of New Stone Age, five new dwelling sites of the period of the Three States (Samguk) and about one thousand artifacts including comb-pattern pottery and different kinds of accessories. In particular, last year, they found Okjae accessories known to have been made in the New Stone Age. This year, Obsidian stone tool (sharp stoneware made from Obsidian discovered in volcanic zone) was excavated. These discoveries gained academic recognition. Also, a researcher at Hanyang University Cultural Heritage Research Institute said that these artifacts might have come from a place far away from Amsadong. Along with that, he also mentioned that people of New Stone Age might have made a long distance travel and traded with other people. HaeSik Lee, head of Gangdong-gu emphasized the importance of Amsadong historic ruins and said he’ll work hard to expand business to register Amsadong historic site in the World Heritage Site. Gangdong-gu expects to share the results of excavation investigation and discuss the value of historic relics and any future plans with the residents of Gangdong-gu. |
